What the role covers
An Aircraft Maintenance Engineer inspects, services, repairs and certifies aircraft and their components. Depending on the licence category and the organisation, that means line maintenance on the ramp between flights, scheduled base maintenance checks in a hangar, component work in a specialised workshop, or defect rectification against the Minimum Equipment List.
The work is governed by approved data — the maintenance manual, service bulletins, airworthiness directives and the organisation's own procedures. A certifying engineer signs the Certificate of Release to Service, which is a personal legal responsibility, not a formality. That is why licences, type ratings and currency records matter so much in this profession.

- EASA Part-66 licence category and sub-category (A, B1, B2, B3, C)
- Aircraft type ratings held, and how recent the experience on type is
- ATA chapters and aircraft systems worked on in practice
- Base or line maintenance background, and shift pattern tolerance
